Print Liberation

markj | March 24, 2008 | 6:55 pm

Got an email from Print Liberation today, suggesting I take a look at their store and check out what they have to offer - and i’m pleased with what I came across

type.jpg

“Philadelphia-based design studio Print Liberation carries a line of tees, prints, and accessories that will make any font nerd swoon.”

obama_gateway-1.jpg

Founded in 1999, Print Liberation is a full-service Philadelphia-based creative visual agency and the collective endeavor of three artists who share a passion for print, design, and culture.

The Print Liberation team has done it all. We have designed for small, mid-sized and large clients and created logos, posters and full print campaigns for sneakers, car shares, museums and retail spaces. We have managed photo shoots for major magazines, started our own clothing company (Art in the Age of Mechanical Reproduction; founded a gallery (Black Floor/Copy); authored a book on screenprinting (due out in June of 2008) and finally, quit our jobs at large advertising agencies, so that we can do what we do best - work directly with our customers to create effective design for your premium brand/creative business that reflects our our knowledge of contemporary art, culture and commerce.

Check out more at their store

With a name like Monsieur T. there are some obvious French influences at work for the Portland based brand. With inspirations derived from the brands roots growing up skating and snowboarding in France, the collection looks to talented artists as part of their seasonal offerings. Designs by Paul Jacober

markj | March 15, 2008 | 5:38 pm

deer-and-cockeral.jpg

Paul Jacober is a unique apparel line created by well known graphic designer Paul Jacober whose mission is to recover Miami Beach Cool. Clearly distinctive, the shirts have a vintage undertone mixed with an urban sensibility without being aged or washed out.

“The great thing about these shirts is that it is the first REAL fashion-take on what some could consider a souvenir shirt,” said Paul. “The reason being is that the shirts represent innovative and imaginative designs on an upscale quality of shirt. All these details strategically thought out allow the shirt to easily transition from daytime wear to nighttime hip.”

The latest collection of Paul Jacober tees is called ‘Nevermind The Roses’. A tongue-in-cheek excuse to play with the British imagery craze that has overtaken the states. The graphics include union jacks mixed with different iconic imagery such as deers (for all the deer hunting Brits), Roosters, a Grace Jones homage, spilled and broken Toile patterns and fancy chandeliers. This collection steers clear of any frills and aims for a darker, sophisticated and crisp cool look.

“My designs work perfectly on garments,” said Paul. “Creating cool attire is just a natural extension of my specialty- great design.”

Paul Jacober graduated from Pepperdine University in Malibu before studying abroad in London. Paul has worked with various New York institutions; the School of Visual Arts in Manhattan, Vibe Magazine, and Museums New York Magazine. In 2000, Paul started Jacober + Associates, a design and advertising company. Some clients have included The Rubell Hotels and Rubell Family Art Collection, Mark Soyka Restaurants/Properties, and Base Clothing Store on Lincoln Road.

“I’ve been fortunate to live and work in four large Metropolitan cities like Los Angeles, London, New York and Miami,” Paul explains. “All of which have helped shape my design aesthetic and opened my eyes to different clothing styles and ideas.”

The shirts retail between $42-68 and are available at various boutiques, online stores and at www.pauljacober.com

markj | | 4:59 pm

In celebration of their new album, the invisible line, temposhark would like you to design a t-shirt for their upcoming tour!

All Temposhark Contest Designs should be based on the theme “The Invisible Line”, which is the name of their upcoming album. Designs should not contain the name of the band nor album name.

The top ten designs will be presented to Temposhark where they will choose the top two. The Grand Prize winning design will appear on a t-shirt which will be produced and sold as Temposhark merchandise as well as in the Design By Humans online store.

A bit about the band:

An iTunes “Staff Favorite” and featured band on MySpace, UK electro-rock band Temposhark, has already enjoyed great success in Europe where they are considered a mainstay in the London club scene. Comprised of Rob Diament (vocals), Luke Busby (keyboards and trumpet), Mark Ferguson (bass) and Mathis Richet (drums), their debut full-length album, “The Invisible Line”, will be out on March 25th in the US/Canada and March 24th in the UK. Tracks from the upcoming CD are peppered with celebrity appearances; including two-time Grammy nominee Imogen Heap, as well as tracks produced with Guy Sigsworth (Maddona and Bjork), and Sean McGhee (Kate Havnevik and Frou Frou).

Brand Insight: Design By Humans

markj | | 4:54 pm

shop.jpg

Design by Hümans (DBH) is a place for people to submit, discover and buy amazing custom t-shirt designs created by artists from around the world. Based around an ongoing t-shirt design contest, all of the designs you see on Design By Hümans have been submitted by our community. Headquartered in Irvine, California, Design By Hümans officially launched in early July 2007.

A few months back, I was contacted by Jed from DBH who was looking to get the brand out to a wider audience. DBH is already a global brand, but they want to push things further, to take over the world so to speak. He pointed me in the direction of the website and i was instantly overcome with joy as I saw tshirt after tshirt with superb designs on them. Had I found my new vice site?  (I think so)

So, it’s taken me a few months to finally get round to making this post - but it was worth it in the end, and I’ll run you through a little of what DBH do and over the coming weeks, there should be an interview, some details of the new competitions they’re running and much more…

The all important bit, the tshirt review. Jed was kind enough to send through a variety of both mens and womens tees, for me to review and I have to say - I’m very impressed with both quality and design overall. A bigger photoshoot, perhaps more wacky is due in the very near future - I’m just currently very busy at work.

img_0248.jpg

I’ve scoured the site all over, and DBH uses a variety of techniques for the printing on to their tees - including foils, inks that soften in the wash to give a worn look and more.

Check out the Specialty Inks, the Mixed Media and Classic here. The designs are printed on premium quality tshirts which have a lovely soft texture to them - and once washed, there isn’t much sign of shrinkage - which is always important to look out for. The inside neck has a bit of information and care for the shirt, which personally, I think is a neat touch. Gives a bit of added character to the garment you’re wearing. See this below:

img_0250.jpg

I’ve chosen to review just two of the shirts that Jed sent, to save space, and to be honest, reviewing 12 shirts - I think I could go on forever. First up “Guard Your Grill” by Eskimokiss.

img_0249.jpg

100% Ringspun Cotton, Premium Fashion Fit Tee. Super Soft Oversize Waterbase Print with Gold Foil Teeth! Printed on ‘Special Ops Black’

A halftoned pattern of a skull on a black tee? Sound familiar - well yes, we do see stuff like this all the time, but this has an added bonus - flexed up grills with gold foil. Nice touch to round off the tshirt

Secondly we have Robot Attack by LegionOfDoom

img_0252.jpg

A HUGE amount of intricate detail on this tshirt - the design is out of this world. So much care and attention has gone into creating a montage of “Robots at War” so to speak. The front is littered with cartoon-esque drawings of robots challenging each other in battle - laced with gold and silver foil printing to bring out the details and highlights - I’m loving this tee!

Again, as all tees from DBH are, printed on supersoft cotton with the inside neck giving dedication to the creator of the tee and washing instructions - and like before, a nice touch.

So, in essence, DBH is a site, much like Threadless, but in my opinion far superior - Yes it may not be as well known - but with 18,000 users and rising, DBH produces quality tshirts with super high quality designs every single day. Yes, that’s right there’s new designs every day - does your wallet go that deep?

DBH also has a Tshirt Design 101 section for all you budding artists/designers wishing to submit to their competition:

“For those who are new to the world of t-shirt graphic design and decoration, we would like to open your eyes to the many design possibilities available here at Design By Humans and help get your creativity flowing. Along with standard plastisol inks, below are a few of the other techniques and processes we are currently offering to our designers. Keep checking back as this list will continue to grow and evolve.”

To have a look at the rules and the HUGE prizes, check here - and then getting scribbling!

Earn yourself some free shirts by collecting DBH Dollars

Refer a friend to Design By Hümans and get 2 DBH Dollars added to your account if the referral results in a sale. Also, earn 1 DBH Dollar each time you upload a photo of yourself wearing a tee that you purchased here at Design By Hümans.

futura-laboratories-map-pointman-collection-1.jpg

Located within Fukuoka’s Dice&Dice building, the Futura Laboratories Shop has held it down as an obvious choice as the best place for FL related gear. The Map Pointman collection utilizes Futura’s iconic Pointman with a print of the city of Fukuoka seen within. Aside from the FL Shop location, other local spots and attractions can also be seen. Both t-shirts and mousepads are available.
